Britain was caught in a deadly struggle with the Napoleonic empire in 1812 so it did not pay much attention to American complaints about British violations of American sovereignty and maritime rights. Even after the United States declared war, Britain saw the North American conflict as far less significant than the war against Napoleon. Eventually, after considering the astounding resources the colony had to offer, Britain mounted a formidable campaign to protect Canada. The inexperienced Canadian militia and an assembly of First Nations allies, banded together with the stubborn regulars of the British Army to stop the American invasion.
