Fort Mackinac
Early in the War of 1812, Fort Mackinac was left in the charge of a small American detachment under Lt. Porter Hanks. Not having been notified that his country had declared war on Britain, he was easily "surprised" by a combined British and First Nations detachment on July 17, 1812. Hanks promptly surrendered when threatened with "retaliations" by First Nations warriors.
