Fort Niagara
Built on the New York side of the Niagara River, Fort Niagara was directly across the entrance to Lake Ontario from British Fort George. It served as a base of operations to both American Generals Van Rensselear and Smyth in 1812. It was taken by the British in a daring midnight bayonet attack on December 18, 1813. Henry Goulburn tried to hold onto Forts Niagara and Mackinac at the Ghent negotiations, but the British agreed to return them at the end of the war.
