Kinzie Mansion and Fort Dearborn
The Kinzie Mansion belonged to the first white inhabitant of Northern Illinois, a native of Quebec and Indian trader, John Kinzie. It was built c.1796 on the site of present day Chicago, across the Chicago River from Fort Dearborn. Fort Dearborn was named after the American Secretary of War Henry Dearborn. On August 15, 1812, Billy Wells came at the request of General Hull, to escort its garrison and citizens to Fort Wayne. All of them, including Wells, were either killed or captured by First Nations warriors.
