| This fort was built on the Norfolk, Virginia side of the Elizabeth River, a mile and a half below the town. This oblong square with two bastions built chiefly of earth was reinforced by volunteers early in 1813 to repel an attack by British Admiral Warren's fleet. The anticipated attack never took place. |
