| Before the war, Oswego, N.Y., was a very important point along the U.S. supply line and its position on Lake Ontario made it crucial for the trade with York and Kingston, in Upper Canada. The fort, properly called Fort Ontario, was captured by a British naval squadron under Sir James Yeo on May 6, 1814. |
