The Ruins of Fort Erie
Fort Erie was the southern anchor of the British defensive line along the Niagara River. The French had a trading post at this strategic point as early as 1750. Situated at the eastern most end of Lake Erie, the fort consisted of two stone barracks enclosed by two earthen and two masonry bastions. The Americans captured it in May of 1813, only to burn and abandon it a month later.
