| Fort McHenry was built during the War of 1812 specifically to protect the water approaches to Baltimore. It was on a point of land between the Patapsco River and Baltimore's Harbour. It successfully withstood a British naval bombardment on September 13 and 14, 1814. This same bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the American National Anthem. |
