| After the fall of Fort Michilimackinac, Hull ordered the withdrawal of the troops of Fort Dearborn located near the mouth of the Chicago River. Captain Nathan Heald was to evacuate the army and the settlers living in the fort and proceed to Fort Wayne. On August 12,1812, the settlers and a handful of lightly armed officers were attacked by 500 Potawatomi warriors. The few that escaped with their lives were made prisoners of war. |
