James Bayard
|
James Bayard was
one of three American diplomats sent to St. Petersburg to negotiate an end
to the War of 1812. He was a Federalist who had opposed the war since before
its beginning. He saw it as his solemn duty to end it with all possible
expediency. He was the least cultured of the group, an unprepossessing senator
from Delaware, unaccustomed to aristocratic etiquette and the diplomatic
French. He became ill and extremely homesick during the long and fruitless
stay in Russia. He also developed a dislike for John Quincy Adams,
though he would later come to appreciate his talents.
He died only six months after the peace talks ended in 1814. |
