Edward Baynes
|
An astute and personable diplomat, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Baynes was sent by Governor General George Prevost to negotiate an armistice with U.S. Secretary of War Henry Dearborn in July of 1812. During his journey to Albany, New York, Baynes shrewdly took note of how the region was preparing itself for war. He also recorded popular American sentiment towards the conflict. He reported to Prevost that the people in New York and Vermont were neither prepared for, nor enthusiastic about a war with their Canadian neighbours . |
