The Adventures of Billy Green, "the Scout"

Boys at War

Billy Green and his brother, Levi, were young and spirited Canadian soldiers under John Harvey at the Battle of Stoney Creek in June of 1813. Billy earned local fame as "The Scout" for his contribution to the British campaign against the Americans advancing across the Niagara Peninsula.

Prior to the battle, he went in search of his brother-in-law, Isaac, who had been captured by the Americans. Isaac had already escaped by pretending to be on the American side. He had also managed to find out the American countersign (password). When Billy found him and received this information, he bolted back to the British camp. Harvey gave Billy his corporal’s sword and asked him to lead the troops in the nighttime raid on the American camp. The password worked on the American pickets and the British used the element of surprise to their advantage in the dawn attack.

Though Billy’s essential contribution to this successful attack was never officially recognized by Harvey or the British military, he became a folk hero in Upper Canadian history.
