George Izard
|
George Izard, a southern aristocrat, was a highly competent soldier. He was Wade Hamptons second-in-command until his resignation, after which Izard took over his position. Originally in charge of U.S. land forces at Lake Champlain in 1814, he was ordered by Secretary of War John Armstrong to take the bulk of his troops to reinforce the army of Niagara, leaving the door open to British invasion under George Prevost in late August. |
