Jacob and David Manning

David
and Jacob Manning were Canadian farmers who worked as spies for the British.
In October of 1813, U.S. General Hampton attempted to solicit their services
on behalf of the United States, but he succeeded only in giving over news
of his advance on the border to the British spies (their allegiance to the
British cause was unknown to the General). Due to their information, Colonel
Charles de Salaberry was fully aware of Hampton's movements and the number
of his troops. This knowledge proved extremely useful in the ensuing battle
of Chateauguay. |
