William McCullough
American
|
A captain in the
American militia, William McCullough was a leader of the Kentucky Rangers
during the early part of the war. He led skirmishes against the British
and First Nations as General Hulls army was
positioning itself to march at Amherstburg. Apparently, McCullough had the
distinction of having taken the first native scalp of the war. Only days
later at Brownstown, McCullough was himself scalped, and his mutilated corpse
served as a grisly warning to Americans in the area. |
