Merritt
began the war by serving in his father's Niagara Light Dragoons until the
unit was disbanded in 1813. He was later chosen to lead the Provincial Dragoons;
the blue uniforms which were useful for tricking Americans into divulging
information. On more than one occasion, Merritt successfully posed as a
U.S. soldier to solicit information. He was captured at Lundy's
Lane, and did not fight again. Merritt went on to become a leader in
canal development in Canada, and a member of the Legislative Council of
Canada. |
