War of 1812people

William Hamilton Merritt

Canadian

Merritt began the war by serving in his father's Niagara Light Dragoons until the unit was disbanded in 1813. He was later chosen to lead the Provincial Dragoons; the blue uniforms which were useful for tricking Americans into divulging information. On more than one occasion, Merritt successfully posed as a U.S. soldier to solicit information. He was captured at Lundy's Lane, and did not fight again. Merritt went on to become a leader in canal development in Canada, and a member of the Legislative Council of Canada.
