War of 1812people

Caught between two large and land-hungry powers, the First Nations stood to lose the most in this conflict. Warriors, chiefs and powerful speakers all struggled to maintain their communities and cultures rooted in the diverse landscapes of North America.

NOTE: The frequent neglect of British and American authorities to document Native participation in reports, combined with differing methods of preserving history, has left us with less original documentation regarding individuals among the First Nations. Many of the Native speeches you will come across were transcribed by so-called Indian agents, most of whom were part Native and who worked for the white governments.
