Red Jacket

First Nations

The Six Nations of the Iroquois

Red Jacket was an Iroquois of the New York region who led his people against the combined British and First Nations forces, which included Iroquois from the Grand River community and areas of Lower Canada. Red Jacket fought with Peter B. Porter's brigade on the fateful day at Chippawa where almost one hundred Iroquois were killed. After this devastating encounter Red Jacket, along with other chiefs such as Blue Sky and Cornplanter, distanced themselves from the American army.
