Charles de Salaberry
Charles de Salaberrys letter to his father after Chateauguay |
Charles de Salaberry responds to the Legislative Assembly's unanimous vote of thanksI received today the resolution that you did me the honour to send on behalf of the Honourable Chambre d'Assemblée, by which that respectable body deigns to offer its thanks to me and to all the fighting men under my command at the action of Chateauguay. When my three hundred brave companions thwarted the enemy army from penetrating into the country, we only thought, they and I, of simply doing our duty, serving our sovereign and saving our country from the miseries of an invasion. In the single satisfaction of having succeeded, we found ample reward: however today we have received another and highly esteemed one in the distinguished honour whch it has pleased the Chambre d'Assemblée to confer on us. It offers us its thanks. This generous gesture has made a very lively and profound impession on us which will last for the rest of our lives. The country shows itself, through its representatives, nobly grateful, putting the highest price and the most flattering, on the services of its subjects. |
