Galafilm wins Emmy for Cirque du Soleil Fire Within
Montreal, September 15, 2003

The television documentary series “Cirque du Soleil Fire Within,” coproduced by Galafilm and Créations Musca, a subsidiary of Cirque du Soleil Images, has taken the Emmy in the category Outstanding Nonfiction Program (Alternative). The series won out over the four other shows in contention, including “The Osbournes” (MTV Networks). The Creative Arts Awards gala was held on Saturday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“We are flattered by this honour,” said Vincent Gagné, Vice-President of Cirque du Soleil Images. “This documentary series marks the first time we have created an actual television series. The television content we have created in the past has always been in the form of live shows filmed for television or documentary television specials.” The 13-episode documentary explores the creation of Cirque du Soleil’s show Varekai, which premiered in Montreal in April 2002. The series aired during the 2002-2003 season on Global Television Network and ARTV in Canada, and on the Bravo network in the United States.

“Galafilm’s expertise in documentaries combined with the magic of Cirque du Soleil and the richness of the subject matter proved to be a perfect creative blend,” adds Arnie Gelbart, Founder and President of Galafilm. “We are very proud of the result, and we are delighted with the reaction that it has met with.”

Above and beyond the honour that this award represents, the wonderful response of television audiences and media alike demonstrates that Cirque du Soleil has succeeded in moving the public with television content, just as it does with its shows. The protagonists of this series are not fictional characters, but actual artists and employees whose passion and determination make them authentic and endearing figures.

The Executive Producers of “Cirque du Soleil Fire Within” are Arnie Gelbart, Vincent Gagné and Marie Côté. The Producers are Sylvie Wilson and Martin Bolduc, while Valérie Beaugrand Champagne is the Content Producer and Script Editor. “Cirque du Soleil Fire Within” is a co-production of Galafilm and Créations Musca in association with Global Television Network, ARTV and Bravo USA, with the participation of the Canadian Television Fund created by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Cable Industry, the FCT: Licence Fee Program, the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit and the Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit.
